ABC Is In Talks About Potentially Making A Star Wars TV Show
Variety- ABC is still hoping to visit a galaxy far, far away, according to network president Channing Dungey, who says the Alphabet has been in discussions with Lucasfilm over the possibility of bringing the “Star Wars” universe to TV. “As a fan I would absolutely love to say yes,” Dungey said during her executive session at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We have had conversations with [Lucasfilm] and we will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand onto our programming.”
After the panel, Dungey told a handful of reporters that as of now, there’s nothing official in the works in terms of a series. “It’s all a little bit hush-hush. That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvel is secretive, Lucas takes it to a whole other level,” she admitted. “[Talks] are ongoing. We don’t really have an official timeline yet.”
Really torn about this news. On one hand, the more Star Wars #content out there, the better. If it’s a good show, it’s yet another way to pass some time without having to do things like “exercise” and “leaving the house”. Sure the shows won’t be able to get the cast of the movies, at least not full-time. But if Disney wants to squeeze every red cent out of this franchise, they will find a way to make the show at the very least exciting. And a lightsaber duel here or there wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world I suppose.
But like all things Star Wars related, there is a dark side. Can we really trust Lucasfilm to keep pumping out Star Wars #content without screwing it up? I think we all went into Episode VII hoping for the best but expecting the worst (and it was much closer to best than worst). But I just can’t shake the thought of another Jar Jar Binks type coming into the show and irrationally pissing me off. Or a miniseries about midi-chlorians spinning off. Nobody wins if that happens. I’m already nervous about how Rebel One is going to turn out. I don’t need to see another beloved franchise get a train run on it just to sell more merchandise. Plus can you imagine what a Charlie Wisco blog about a Star Wars TV show would look like? Paragraphs on graphs on graphs. That is no way for a kid in his early 20s to spend his free time. I was more than fine with Star Wars simply existing as the movies we all geeked out for every so often, along with the cartoons that I forget exist and video games that usually disappoint.
Or I guess the third option is that the show is meh or worse, which leads to all of us agreeing to ignore it and act like it never happened like the prequels.
